Thank you for your interest in commissioning me for a piece of artwork. I offer different rates for businesses, individuals, and non-profits based on the cost of materials, number of hours I expect to work on the piece and the intended use of the finished work. Please read the entirety of this page before you contact me requesting an image.

Subject Matter

I am able to work in many types of subject matter, but I prefer cartoon or realistic character subjects. Please see my online gallery for samples. I can draw your company or organization's mascot, your dog's portrait, or your personal avatar character. I am versatile and can work in a variety of styles.

For legal reasons I am unable to draw trademarked characters for you or create copies of images to which neither you nor I own the copyright. Aside from that, please contact me with your idea and I will let you know my availability to create such a work for you.

Media

I am able to work in a variety of artistic media, including:

  • Acrylic paint
  • Goache
  • Watercolor
  • Pen and ink
  • Pencil
  • Charcoal and soft pastel
  • Oil pastel
  • Digital raster (Photoshop)

Payment

Due to the differences between commission jobs, I cannot provide a simple list of flat prices. Contact me with your idea for a free price quote. Please include in the e-mail whether you are an individual, business, or non-profit organization and how you wish to use the work.

Prices depend heavily on the type of license you desire. The quote is also based on anticipated material costs and time.

A nonrefundable deposit of 10% of the quote or $10 USD (whichever is greater) is required before I start working on the piece. This is solely to ensure that customers are serious about following through with the commission and that I am able to pay for materials even in the event that a customer changes his or her mind after the work is started.

Licenses

The license that comes with your commissioned work dictates how both you and I can use this work commercially. There are four basic licenses I offer for the custom works I create: work-for-hire, exclusive license, nonexclusive license, and limited license. I will ask you which license you desire before I can offer you a price quote.

Work-for-Hire

A work-for-hire job is one where I create a picture for your company alone. After the work is finished, you receive authority over the work's copyright. I do not maintain any rights to display or sell the work and may do so only with the new copyright owner's permission. Naturally this is the most expensive of the licenses, since the artist loses all rights to profit from the work in the future.

Exclusive License

The exclusive license is like giving you the copyright, but it allows me to create and sell non-competing products featuring the custom artwork. I may display it online in a non-competing way if I choose to do so. I cannot sell licenses to use this work to your competitors or anyone else.

Nonexclusive License

A nonexclusive license is similar to the exclusive license, except that I may also sell licenses for other companies to use this work. Nonexclusive licenses are very cheap compared to the other two licenses. You may also purchase this type of license on one of my existing works.

Limited License

The limited license is the default license for personal, individual commissions unless the customer specifies otherwise. This license permits the customer to display copies of the work, but not to profit from them. I retain rights to create prints or other products featuring the work if I choose to do so. However, if a customer specifically does not want a print or other item created from his or her personal commission, I will honor that request.

Procedure

Ready to order a commission? Here is the procedure that you may expect to follow to ensure a speedy and pleasant transaction for both of us:

  1. Read this page in its entirety, and decide the specifics of what you want.
  2. E-mail me with the specifics of your commission. This includes:
    • Description of your desired image
    • Medium you wish to be used
    • Format in which you would like the work delivered: hard copy (you pay for shipping), high quality digital image, web quality digital image
Note: Please include specific image dimensions if you have size requirements.
    • License that you wish to purchase
    • Deadlines, if applicable
  3. I notify you about my availability and whether I can accept your commission. If I am available, I provide a price quote and a copy of your license contract.
  4. You notify me about whether you accept my terms. Send your deposit (10% of the price quote or $10 USD, whichever is greater) and a signed copy of your contract (either digital or by mail).
  5. Sit back and relax while I work on your commission. I will show you the progress of the work periodically for approval. This is your opportunity to instruct me to make changes.
  6. When the work is finished, I will send you a low-resolution image for final approval and the payment amount due (total quote minus your deposit). Any changes made beyond this point may result in a higher final price.
  7. When you've approved the final image, I send it to you in the method you specified earlier. Enjoy your new piece of custom artwork!
